Organizational Setting

The Department of Management provides a platform of services that supports the successful delivery of the IAEA's scientific and technical programmes. The Division of Human Resources plans, acquires and manages human resources to help implement IAEA programmes.

The VIC Medical Service serves the staff of all VIC Based Organizations, promotes staff health, provides for an occupationally safe and healthy work environment, and ensures that UN Common System medical standards are maintained at the VIC.

Main Purpose

Reporting to the Medical Director, the Senior Medical Officer improves the health of individual staff members through medical advice, counselling and facilitating contact to treatment facilities in the duty station. The role also optimizes staff health by advising management on occupational health aspects of employment and work environment and by giving medical opinions in individual cases.

Role

The Senior Medical Officer is a general specialist with broad expertise in clinical medicine, occupational health, emergency medicine, travel and tropical medicine, radiation protection and medico-legal issues; an adviser to management; and a promoter of a healthy and safe work environment.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Undertake day-to-day clinical duties including periodical medical examinations, treatment, walk-in-clinic services and immunizations.
  • Counsel staff on travel and preventive medicine.
  • Provide first aid and emergency treatment.
  • Oversee health education and health promotion programs.
  • Refer staff to outside specialists, coordinate medical and administrative requirements and liaise with medical institutions in Vienna and elsewhere.
  • Investigate occupational and environmental health problems.
  • Advise organizations on occupational health and individual cases.
  • Oversee medical clearances, sick leave, medical evacuations, medical disability and medical insurance claims.
  • Support planning, organizing, managing, supervising and coordinating medical services in the VIC.
  • Deputize for the Medical Director.

Required Expertise

  • Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to interpret medical information, summarize findings and contribute to or draft reports and policies.
  • Empathy, tact and discretion in dealing with patients.
  • Knowledge of public health, supplemented by familiarity with global health workforce issues and challenges.
  • Working knowledge of occupational health, travel medicine, public health and acute care.
  • Proficiency in MS Office. Working knowledge of an occupational health record system is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of radiation protection is an asset.

Qualifications, Experience and Language Skills

  • Medical degree with current medical registration.
  • At least 10 years of relevant and progressively responsible clinical experience, including some years at international level.
  • Broad clinical experience in a variety of settings.
  • Experience in acting with a high level of initiative and independence, including the ability to make medical decisions.
  • Experience in dealing with administrative issues and supervising staff.
  • Knowledge and practical experience in occupational health and business administration would be an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English and German.
  • Knowledge of other official IAEA languages is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $103165, a variable post adjustment currently amounting to US $53646, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses, 6 weeks annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
