Research Group Leader in Cardiopulmonary Molecular Biology (m/f/x)

With around 6.500 employees and 8.600 students, the Medical University of Vienna is one of the largest top-level biomedical research and teaching institutions in Europe. The Division of Pediatric Cardiology (Pediatric Heart Center Vienna) of the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery is looking for a full-time (40 hours per week) Research Group Leader in Cardiopulmonary Molecular Biology (m/f/x) (start date: 01.10.2026). This is a contract for a duration of 3 years. 

 

Your Tasks

A research group leader position at the Medical University of Vienna (MUW), Division of Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Heart Center Vienna, is available to study the mechanisms of pulmonary vascular disease and heart failure, and related translational therapeutic interventions, including cell (iPS cells, mesenchymal stem and progenitor cells), RNA (miR/anti-miR, synthetic modified RNA) and pharmacological approaches. One major goal is the establishment of a human umbilical cord stem cell program.

 

Your Profile

Candidates should be highly motivated and focused, must hold a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree in cell/molecular biology or related field, have at least 5 high impact first/senior author original research publications, successful grant applications, the ability to hold deadlines, the willingness to teach others, and very good English language skills.

Basic biochemistry and molecular biology techniques (siRNA, qPCR, Western blotting, ELISA) are mandatory. Experience with stem cell isolation and differentiation/iPS cells is highly expected. Experience with culture of primary SMCs, cardiomyocytes, and/or endothelial cells, ChIP, immunohistochemistry, cloning, and/or advanced molecular biology techniques (including cloning, lentiviral shRNAi and/or CRISPR/Cas9 in mammalian cells), is mandatory. Experience and expertise in animal surgery such as transaortic constriction and/or pulmonary artery banding models, as well as closed-chest cardiac catheterization and organ harvest in rodents, and histological quantitative heart-lung tissue analysis is highly desired.

The minimum monthly salary for this position (Uni-KV, VerwGr. B1) is currently Euro 6.009,- gross (14x per year) on a full-time basis and may be increased by taking into account relevant previous experience and other salary components related to the specificities of the job.

Mehr als 1,8 Millionen ambulante Behandlungen zählte das Wiener AKH allein im Jahr 2024. Den ärztlichen Dienst dahinter trägt zu großen Teilen die Medizinische Universität Wien. Wer hier arbeitet, versorgt Patientinnen und Patienten in einem der größten Krankenhäuser Europas und forscht und lehrt oft zugleich.

Begonnen hat alles 1365, mit der Medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Wien. Eigenständig ist die MedUni Wien seit dem 1. Jänner 2004. Heute studieren hier rund 8.600 Menschen – mehr als an jeder anderen medizinischen Ausbildungsstätte im deutschsprachigen Raum. Etwa 6.500 Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter halten Forschung, Lehre und Krankenversorgung in Gang.

Die Arbeit verteilt sich auf 30 Universitätskliniken, zwei klinische Institute und zwölf medizinisch-theoretische Zentren. In den Kliniken behandeln Ärztinnen und Ärzte Patientinnen und Patienten des AKH Wien; allein 2024 waren es über 47.000 Operationen. In den Laboren erforschen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler Krebs, das Immunsystem, das Herz-Kreislauf-System und das Gehirn. Ein Betrieb dieser Größe braucht außerdem Verwaltung, Technik und IT – den sogenannten Universitätsdienst. So reicht das Spektrum vom Operationssaal über das Forschungslabor bis zum Schreibtisch.

Für Forschende trägt die MedUni Wien seit März 2022 das HR-Excellence-in-Research-Siegel der Europäischen Kommission, das eine faire Personalauswahl und verlässliche Karrierewege auszeichnet. Die Universität arbeitet mit klar geregelten Karrieremodellen für Medizinerinnen und Mediziner und holt regelmäßig Fachleute aus dem Ausland nach Wien. Die Belegschaft ist international, der Standort ist es ebenso.

Ihren Sitz hat die Universität als Körperschaft öffentlichen Rechts in der Spitalgasse 23 im 9. Wiener Bezirk, direkt am AKH. Mit dem Campus Mariannengasse rücken ab 2027 auch die vorklinischen Fächer näher an die Klinik heran.
